Course structure

Module 1: Introduction to Research in Physiotherapy

Objective: Familiarize clinicians with the importance of research in advancing physiotherapy practice.

  • Key Topics:
    • Definition and significance of research in physiotherapy (SM)
    • Role of evidence-based practice in clinical decision-making (MS)

15-20 discussion between us introducing key elements about the importance of research and EBP in physiotherapy.  Invite colleagues to record short video related to this point

---------------------------------------------------

Module 2: Reading and Understanding Research Papers (Basic)

Objective: Equip clinicians with the skills to critically read and comprehend research papers.

  • Key Topics:
    • Structure of a research paper.
    • Identifying and understanding key sections (abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion
    • Key items when you scan a paper (eg- title, abstract, search date in SR, follow-up in RCT)

PP with narrative (21m), plus discussion between us

MORE SPECIALISED (From basic to complicated, with mandatory participation and compulsory tasks with each module)

----------------------------------------------

Module 3: Research Methodology in Physiotherapy

Objective: Introduce clinicians to various research methodologies used in physiotherapy research.

  • Key Topics:
    • Experimental and non-experimental study designs.
    • Quantitative and qualitative research methods.
    • Ethical considerations in physiotherapy research

PP narrative (two parts = 34m + 29m in length), task, plus live Q & A

------------------------------------------

Module 4: Critiquing Research Studies

Objective: Enable clinicians to critically evaluate the quality of research studies.

  • Key Topics:
    • Assessing study validity and reliability.
    • Identifying bias and limitations in research.
    • Formulating constructive critiques of research papers.

Introduction to CASP PP narrative (13m) – should be earlier? In session 2?

Read assigned paper and apply CASP in groups of 2 / 3, live discussion of results

(4 papers (2 RCTs, 1 cohort study, 1 SR) + appropriate CASP tools)

------------------------------------------

Module 5: Conducting a Literature Review

Objective: Guide clinicians in conducting comprehensive literature reviews.

  • Key Topics:
    • Search strategies and databases.
    • Synthesizing evidence from multiple studies.
    • Writing a literature review relevant to physiotherapy practice.

PP narrated (31m), task (find clinical topic that might be suitable for SR), live discussion

------------------------------------------------

Module 6: Statistical Literacy for Clinicians

Objective: Develop clinicians' understanding of basic statistical concepts used in research.
  • Key Topics:
    • Descriptive and inferential statistics.
    • Common statistical tests used in physiotherapy research.
    • Interpreting statistical results in research papers.

PP narrated (24m) plus live discussion about questions arising

-------------------------------------------------

Module 7: Applying Evidence in Clinical Practice

Objective: Train clinicians to extract and apply clinical knowledge from research papers related to specific clinical scenario
  • Key Topics:
    • Translating research findings into clinical practice.
    • Integrating evidence-based interventions into patient care.

PP narrated (? NOTHING DONE SO FAR? Do we need one?). Specific clinical topic – student’s choice related to RQ for session 8?

--------------------------------------------------

Module 8: Designing and Implementing Clinical Research. Writing a research proposal.

Objective: Introduce clinicians to the process of designing and conducting their own research projects.

  • Key Topics:
    • Formulating research questions and hypotheses.
    • Research protocol development.
